Why We Offer LASIK for Life
Does LASIK last forever, or will the results eventually wear off? We get this question a lot, so let’s break it down. Consider this: When you pop in a contact lens or slip on a pair of glasses, you are using a temporary form of vision correction. Contact lenses and glasses do not permanently change the physical shape of your eye, but they help light hit the right spot on your retina for you to see clearly.
During LASIK surgery, a laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct refraction issues causing blurry vision. This change to your cornea is permanent and intended to last forever; it is not something that will “wear off.” That being said, your eyes can change over time. There are a few reasons why an individual’s vision might change following their LASIK surgery:
An existing eye condition—such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism—might progress.
During LASIK, the imperfections in the cornea that cause these conditions are eliminated. But in rare cases, the condition might continue to progress after the procedure. These individuals may need a minor enhancement of their LASIK surgery. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, on average, only 1 to 2 percent of individuals who receive LASIK will require an enhancement in the first 12 months following their procedure. That drops to just 1 percent after 12 months.
After an individual reaches the age of 40, he or she is likely to develop presbyopia, also known as age-related farsightedness.
Presbyopia is a common, gradual condition that many older adults will experience. LASIK cannot prevent or treat presbyopia, which occurs in the lens of the eye behind the cornea. It is because of presbyopia that some adults who have had LASIK will still use reading glasses later in life.
