Monovision LASIK
Lasik Vision Centers of Cleveland is one of the leading vision correction providers in Cleveland, Ohio, as we specialize in a variety of advanced eye surgeries, including Monovision LASIK.
This type of LASIK procedure corrects one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision. Within a few weeks, the brain begins to adjust and “blend” your vision, allowing you to see clearly at both near and far distances.
What is Monovision LASIK?
During Monovision LASIK, one eye is corrected for distance vision, while the other eye is intentionally left slightly nearsighted to enhance near vision. This creates a natural form of "blended" vision, allowing individuals to see clearly at both near and far distances without the need for reading glasses or bifocals.
While it may take some time for the brain to adapt to this asymmetrical focusing, many people find monovision to be a practical solution for maintaining visual acuity at various distances as they age.
How Monovision is Different from Standard LASIK
Monovision LASIK uses the same technology as traditional LASIK but corrects one eye for near vision and the other for distance vision. This virtually painless procedure reshapes the cornea in each eye for different focal points.
Another difference is that, before undergoing Monovision LASIK, patients usually go through a contact lens trial. This involves:
- Initial Consultation: Similar pre-operative steps as standard LASIK.
- Determining Dominant Eye: Simple tests identify the dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision.
- Contact Lens Trial: Patients wear contact lenses mimicking the Monovision correction to experience the visual outcome.
During the trial, you’ll engage in daily activities to see how Monovision LASIK suits your lifestyle and visual needs, helping you decide if it’s the right choice before proceeding with the surgery.
What is the Recovery from Monovision LASIK Like?
For most patients, the recovery from Monovision LASIK is smooth and accompanied with little to no discomfort. Our team will ensure you have detailed post-operative instructions, so you know what to expect and how to care for your eyes during the recovery period.
It can be difficult adjusting to the anisometropia—the imbalance between the eyes—that’s caused by the procedure. But there are various ways to alleviate the symptoms of anisometropia (such as wearing glasses while doing certain activities as your eyes adjust post-operatively).
It’s normal for patients to experience the following side effects during their Monovision LASIK recovery:
- Glares and halos
- Reduced depth perception
- Reduced vision at night (especially while driving)
- Blurry or distorted distance and/or reading vision
Our team will be with you every step of the way during your recovery and will schedule you for follow-up appointments as necessary to monitor the healing of your eyes.
Am I a Candidate for Monovision LASIK?
The primary candidates for Monovision LASIK are people with presbyopia. This is the term given for the gradual loss of flexibility in the eye’s lens. While traditional LASIK cannot treat presbyopia (or prevent it), Monovision LASIK can be a solution.
Generally, the surgeon considers the following factors when deciding if someone is a good candidate for Monovision LASIK:
- Occupation or daily activities
- Type and severity of the refractive error
- Age (ideal candidates are usually over the age of 45)
- Any level of monovision in your current contact lens prescription
The Pros and Cons of Monovision LASIK
Monovision LASIK has a proven track record of safety and efficacy. For many patients, it’s an easy adjustment and they’re very satisfied with their post-operative results.
In the rare event that you cannot adjust, or your newfound vision doesn’t work for you, it’s possible to return to the clinic to have the results reversed. We strongly recommend undergoing the contact trial lens before the procedure to experience what your vision can feel like, which can better help you decide if Monovision LASIK is right for you.
