What Does Laser Eye Surgery Treat?

LASIK and PRK procedures are designed to be long‑term solutions to visual problems by reshaping the corneal tissue itself, thereby correcting the root of the refractive error. Laser eye surgery can treat most common vision problems.

Refractive errors are often the result of a misshapen cornea, which prevents the eye from refracting light properly, leading to blurry and/or distorted vision. Myopia (also called nearsightedness) occurs when a person can see near objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry.

While a normal eye has a round shape, like a baseball, a myopic eye tends to be longer than usual, which prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, causing visual error.

Hyperopia (also called farsightedness) occurs when a person can see distant objects clearly but struggles to see things close-up. This occurs because a hyperopic eye is shorter than normal, preventing the retina from focusing properly to create a clear image.

Astigmatism occurs when objects appear blurry at both near and far distances. Astigmatic eyes are abnormally shaped like a football, making them more spherical than the round shape they need to take to see clearly, causing visual distortions.

Is Laser Eye Surgery Right for You?

In addition to wanting a reduced dependency on glasses and contacts, people considering laser eye surgery should be at least 18 years old, in good overall health, and educated about what to expect from a vision correction procedure, including the risks and recovery.
