What Causes Sudden Vision Loss in One Eye?

Understanding How to Preserve Your Vision

Sudden vision loss in one eye can be a frightening experience, often raising concerns about underlying health issues. Understanding the potential causes and seeking prompt medical attention are crucial for effective treatment and recovery. In this article, we’ll explore common causes of sudden and temporary vision loss in one eye.

Common Causes of Sudden Vision Loss in One Eye

  • Retinal Detachment: Retinal detachment occurs when the retina, a layer of tissue at the back of the eye, separates from its underlying layer of support tissue. Symptoms include a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, and a shadow over part of your visual field. Immediate medical intervention is necessary to prevent permanent vision loss.
  • Optic Neuritis: This condition involves inflammation of the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Symptoms often include pain and a temporary loss of vision in one eye, typically affecting individuals between the ages of 20 and 40. Optic neuritis can be associated with multiple sclerosis, so further neurological evaluation may be required.
  • Ocular Migraine: Ocular migraines can cause temporary loss of vision in one eye, accompanied by a headache or aura. These visual disturbances can last from a few minutes to about half an hour. Although alarming, ocular migraines usually resolve on their own without long-term damage.
  • Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO): CRAO is a serious condition where the central retinal artery becomes blocked, often by a blood clot, leading to sudden and severe vision loss in one eye. This is considered a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is essential to restore blood flow and preserve vision.
  • Amaurosis Fugax: This is a temporary loss of vision in one eye caused by reduced blood flow, often due to a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Vision usually returns within a few minutes, but this condition serves as a warning sign of potential stroke risk, necessitating immediate medical evaluation.
